Traced back to the Ancient Olympic Games, athletics is a collection of sporting events that involve jumping, running, walking, and throwing. The most common athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and race walking. 

Athletics events are among the oldest of all sports and are often referred to as the backbone of the Summer Olympic Games with numerous track and field events.
