While engaging with stakeholders across teams, schools, colleges, and communities, a shared understanding of key terms and concepts is critical to supporting positive discussions about race and race relations.

RISE has compiled a glossary of terms that often arise within these conversations. These definitions aren’t designed to be extensive. The purpose was to create common ground from which productive discussions about race and racism could occur. We recognize that some of these concepts can have nuanced meanings, and we encourage you to learn more about each term and concept to expand your knowledge. At the end of the glossary, references have been provided to guide further exploration and research.

This resource stems from a Positive Coaching Alliance Trusted Resource- RISE - a national nonprofit that educates and empowers the sports community to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations.
